One of the funnest things that happened to me was when we were playing at Valentine's in Albany, NY. I had my drums back-lined on the stage when the 2nd band (Upon Arrival) was playing. They were playing the show without a drummer due to a sore shoulder or something. Anyway, I went behind the stage to find my stick bag and to get my stuff ready for our set. Just when they finished a song, the bass player asked me if I knew how to play a Weezer song and I said "Yeah, I guess", "What song?" "Hash pipe", he said..so I jumped behind the drums and just hoped for the best. Well, I gave the 4-count and it sounded like we were going to pull it off. Once we got to the solo, I realized that we played it perfectly. When we were finished, the band was blown away. I must admit that I was blown away myself.
ReplyDeleteThen the bass player asked me if I would play one of their originals. (Which I had never heard before in my life) So with slight hesitance I jumped behind the kit again. The guitar player started playing the main riff and I laid down a fat, solid beat. The bass player looked at me for the changes and we pretty much nailed all the parts without the song falling apart. I was amazed at how fun it was to play songs blindly in front of an audience. I wonder how the drummer felt when he heard he got replaced?
